The Indianapolis Colts Have Their New Head Coach

Report | Frank Reich becomes frontrunner to land Colts job

Reich was a former Colts' QB coach and was instrumental in the development of Peyton Manning. Reich was in Indianapolis for six years, serving as an offensive assistant for four of them.

Reich, then, has familiarity with the Colts organization, which perhaps was considered a positive since McDaniels ultimately never became comfortable enough to make the move.

An ESPN report earlier Sunday noted the team was zeroing in on Reich and looking to have a "signed, sealed and delivered contract" in the near future. Pairing Reich with Andrew Luck could make for a unsafe combination, leading the offense to return to its previous level of success. Reich has done an excellent job with the Eagles and the appeal of hiring the Super Bowl-winning coordinator would be an easy sell for the Colts. In 2013 he was hired by the San Diego Chargers as their quarterbacks coach and became the team's offensive coordinator the following year, before joining the Eagles in 2016.

Nonetheless, the Colts are acting quickly to attempt their comeback after McDaniels left them high and dry, and in Reich, they found not only the guy who beat him in the Super Bowl, but the former Bills backup quarterback who authored the greatest comeback ever. The key for the Colts, though, will be the health of quarterback Andrew Luck. Head coach Doug Pederson calls the offensive plays in Philadelphia. The Eagles won the franchise's first Super Bowl last Sunday with a 41-33 victory over New England in Minneapolis even though they had to adjust from starter Carson Wentz to Nick Foles when Wentz suffered a season-ending knee injury in December. He seems like the type of person who would be willing to work with those Colts assistant coaches who were recently hired under the expectations McDaniels would be the coach.

Ballard, in light of McDaniels' reversal, said "just because you're the first choice doesn't make you the right choice".

Reich's most famous National Football League moment came when he was forced to fill in for the injured Jim Kelly during the Bills' 1992 wild card game against the Houston Oilers.
