Three die, others harm in Grand Canyon helicopter crash

At least three killed in Grand Canyon helicopter tour crash

A tourist helicopter has crashed in Arizona's the Grand Canyon, killing three people and injuring four.

Chief Bradley said a Papillion Airways aircraft carrying a pilot and six passengers crashed in the Quartermaster Canyon sometime around 5:20 p.m.

The condition of the four other passengers was unknown. A helicopter crew from Nellis Air Force Base assisted the effort but one of the two helicopters from the Arizona Department of Public Safety was grounded.

"We are in the recovery and investigation mode now", Bradley told The Associated Press.

Papillon didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Papillon, whose website says it is the longest-running helicopter touring company, was founded in 1965 by Elling Halvorson and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015.

Bradley said rescue efforts were still ongoing late Saturday and three of the four injured have yet to be flown out.

He said National Transportation Safety Board officials were expected at the crash scene to begin investigating the cause.

The Federal Aviation Authority's spokesman has explained the helicopter to have undergone "substantial damage".

The 600-employee company has a fleet of 48 helicopters.
