US Military Strikes on Pro-Regime Fighters in Syria Kill 100

American troops look out toward the border with Turkey from a small outpost near the town of Manbij northern Syria Wednesday Feb. 7 2018

Other reports from the Pentagon also indicated that there were some mercenaries from Russian Federation who also perished in the attack.

United States officials have confirmed that an air strike had been carried out against pro-Syrian goverment forces which had attacked the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in what it described as an unprovoked attack on allied Kurdish and Arab fighters. Up to 30 artillery and tank rounds came within 500 yards of an SDF headquarters.

"The recent incident once again shows that the United States' illegal military presence in Syria is actually aimed at taking control of the country's economic assets and not at fighting against the ISIS global terror group", said a statement issued by the Russian Defense Ministry.

The coalition said on Thursday that the air raid targeted government troops who attacked Kurdish-led fighters on the previous day.

The overnight strikes killed an estimated 100 pro-government fighters near the Euphrates river.

The US-led coalition had observed a slow build-up of pro-government forces in the area over the past week and had alerted Russian Federation, which backs the Syrian government, to the presence of SDF forces in the area, according to the official.

The incident underscored the potential for further conflict in Syria's oil-rich east, where the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias holds swathes of land after its offensive against Islamic State.

SOHR said the fighters that attacked the SDF headquarters consisted of Afghan Shiite forces and local tribesmen in support of President Bashar Assad.

Regime forces were likely attempting to take an oilfield near Khusham. He said US and Russian military officers spoke by telephone before and during the confrontation, and there is no indication the aggressors included Russian forces or a militia operating under Russian influence or control. "Why they chose to initiate this attack, you'll have to ask them". The offensive was described by US Army Col. Thomas Veale, a spokesman for the US-led coalition, as a coordinated attack against the USA -backed forces. One SDF member was wounded.

"You've all seen how we reacted to that", Mattis said, referring to last year's cruise missile strikes.

The US-led coalition's attack on pro-government forces in Syria has again proven that Washington's true goal is to capture "economic assets" instead of fighting terrorism, the Russian Defense Ministry said. "Coalition officials were in regular communication with Russian counterparts before, during and after the thwarted PRF attack". "Russian officials assured Coalition officials they would not engage Coalition forces in the vicinity".

In May, coalition aircraft strike a pro-regime convoy as it approaches a training garrison near the Al-Tanf border crossing to Jordan.

The U.S. -led coalition said in a statement said the attack took place 8 kilometers (5 miles) east of the Euphrates River de-confliction line.

The U.S. Navy also launched a volley of Tomahawk missiles at a Syrian airfield in April after Assad's troops used chemical weapons against civilians. Coalition aircraft have struck regime forces who were perceived as posing a threat to a base at At Tanf, Syria, that houses United States and coalition military advisers.
