Google is testing smart replies in popular third-party messaging apps

A Google R&D team wants to bring Smart Reply to all your chat apps

The app is now only being offered to Android users as part of a test, which select people have been invited to.

Smart Reply is an AI-based feature that runs within the app.

Area 120 notes that Reply works with Hangouts, Allo, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Android Messages, Skype, Twitter DMs, and Slack.

The key feature of Reply is that it aims to bring smart replies to the next level. There's a Do Not Disturb mode that switches on when you're driving to silence your phone and alert those who message you that you can't chat, as well as a Vacation Responder that checks your calendar on your behalf to tell people if you're not working.

Reply is now available to some testers who previously signed up to Area 120's Early Access Program.

Google's experimental product lab well known as Area 120 is now testing this new system which is called merely as Reply which is expected to work with Google Hangouts, Allo, Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger.

As per Android Police report, the request to test the app was sent out by Area 120, Google's workshop for experimental products. There's also an automated Vacation Responder that is able to check the user's calendar and tell people that the user is now not at work.

Android Messages has already rolled out limited - but official - support for Smart Replies, we should note. Since it has not yet been availed for all of the users of Android Messages service till the date. Smart Reply would even be able to break out of your phone's silent mode if a message came in that seemed urgent, such as, "We're all here, where are you?" or "I am in the dungeon of the castle, my name is Zelda, please help me". With the given example, Allo could recommend you reply with your current location, allowing your friend to get a better sense of where you are.

The project, like all Area 120 projects, is unrelated to any broader developments at Google - in this case, that means it's not directly tied to Google's messaging efforts.

Smart Reply feature was initially launched by the company for the email app known as Inbox. "Like all other projects within Area 120, it's a very early experiment so there aren't many details to share right now".
