Facebook Hemorrhaging 2 Million Younger Users Every Year

Experts, and Facebook itself, have long warned that the platform could struggle to engage and retain young users as other social media alternatives emerged. Not surprisingly, Facebook has emerged the world's largest social networking site with over 2 billion users.

The number of Facebook users ages 12 to 17 is expected to decrease by 5.6 percent in 2018, according to a forecast from New York-based market research company eMarketer.

Overall, it's estimated that Facebook will lost 2-million users this year that are ages 24 and younger.

The amount of users in that age demographic declined by 1.4 million (9.9 percent) past year, according to data The Daily Caller News Foundation obtained from eMarketer.

This is also the first time eMarketer predicted a decline in the number of US Facebook users in those age groups.

Instagram, which Facebook owns, is still bigger in the USA than Snapchat. But faster-growing Instagram will be used by 104.7 million people in the USA and Snapchat will reach 86.5 million users.

Snap's shares soared 30% last week after it revealed better-than-expected financial results and continued steady growth in its global user base, up from 178 million in the third quarter to 187 million in Q4. Snapchat, in contrast, will add 1.9 million users in the same time period. And, more worryingly, Snapchat is anticipated to gain more, new younger users, than Facebook-owned Instagram.

"This is a logical effect of the "ageing" of Facebook as a proposition and a well-known environment, and the inevitable emergence of newer social platforms offering the buzz of new features and functions", Karina von Abrams added, principal analysist at eMarketer.

This year, in fact, less than half of USA internet consumers ages 12-to-17 will use Facebook, the research foresees. Users have been spending considerably less time on the platform, according to the most recent company earnings report, but profits still soared.

Overall about 2.8 million U.S. users under the age of 25 stopped using Facebook. "It just won't be as cool to certain age groups". Facebook has over two billion users, and yes your mom's daily posting, tagging and liking are enough to keep the platform afloat.

Nonetheless, from a Street perspective, Facebook still remains king of the social platforms. At the start of the year, Facebook promised changes to its product to try to brighten the mood and foster more community pride on the social network. In 2018, less than half of United States teenagers are expected to logon to Facebook once per month. Instagram shares the cool factor, allowing users to create lovely feeds.
