UN Slams Israel for Jailing Ahed Tamimi

The city of Jenin

Various Israeli media reported that police had informed Netanyahu 's lawyers that they were recommending his indictment in both corruption cases involving him that they have been investigating.

The closely watched trial of a Palestinian girl who slapped and punched two Israeli soldiers opened before an Israeli military court on Tuesday, but the judge ordered proceedings to be held behind closed doors in a case that has drawn wide criticism of Israel for prosecuting the teenager.

Only family members were allowed to remain in the courtroom at Ofer military base, and diplomats were also asked to leave. "So the way to keep it out of everybody's eyes is to close doors and not allow people inside the court for her hearing".

Palestinian activist Ahed Tamimi, 16, has gone on trial before an Israeli military court.

They noted that Tamimi was arrested in the middle of the night by well-armed soldiers, and then questioned by Israeli security officials without a lawyer or family members present.

Closed-door proceedings were held for a couple hours before adjourning. "What I think is that the court doesn't think it's good for the court to have all of you inside of it so you can not carry on watching her trial", she told reporters.

Prosecutors requested more time to prepare a response and a new date was set for March 11, according to Lasky.

Tamimi's Israeli lawyer, Gaby Lasky, objected, saying the family wants the proceedings to be public.

Palestinian protest icon Ahed Tamimi is in a courtroom at the Ofer military prison near Jerusalem, Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018.

But it has been criticized by Palestinians, human rights groups, and members of the worldwide community who claim Israel abuses the policy.

"Prisoners held on administrative detention in Zionist jails made a decision to boycott Israeli courts in a final and unprecedented manner... to protest this unjust policy", Issa Qaraqe told a press conference in the West Bank city of Ramallah. She was arrested, and now faces charges of aggravated assault, obstructing the work of soldiers, and incitement. The military said in a statement that it is charging Nariman Tamimi with using Facebook to "incite others to commit terrorist attacks". Protests often ended in stone-throwing clashes.

The internationally known Minister of Education, Naftali Bennett, was more precise in describing the punishment that fit Ahed's supposed crime: "Ahed Tamimi should serve a life sentence for her crime".

"The Tamimi family - which may not be a real family - dresses up kids in American clothes and pays them to provoke IDF troops on camera".

UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in the Palestinian Territory Michael Lynk and Chair-Rapporteur of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention José Antonio Guevara Bermúdez [official profiles] demanded Tamimi's immediate release during the proceedings and called for future hearings to be held in strict accordance with global legal standards.

In a video clip, which quickly went viral, Ms Tamimi is seen kicking, slapping and punching two Israeli soldiers in full combat gear, in her home village of Nabi Saleh, where regular Palestinian protests take place against settlement encroachment.

The Israeli military said the soldiers were in the area to prevent Palestinians from throwing stones at Israeli motorists. Later that day, Ahed confronted Israeli soldiers when they forced themselves into the courtyard of her family's home.

Ahed Tamimi has participated in such marches from a young age, and has had several highly publicized run-ins with soldiers.
