Apple HomePod Leaves Its Mark - On Furniture

Apple HomePod 10+ things you should know before you buy

According to Bloomberg, the speaker generates thinner profit margins for the company compared to products such as the successful Apple Watch and iPhone. Wirecutter noted, "An unhappy discovery after we placed a HomePod on an oiled butcher-block countertop and later on a wooden side table was that it left a defined white ring in the surface".

Our own HomePod review is still ongoing and we'll have a score for you in the coming days. I had the Sonos Ones sitting on top of a pair of speakers with a clear coat, and no white marks were apparent. It's certainly something to be careful of, especially if you're about to put the HomePod down on that rather nice worktop or quality piece of furniture.

The firm added that the rings often go away after a few days when the speaker is removed from the wooden surface.

No white rings formed when the Pocket-Lint reviewer placed the HomePod on a non-Danish wood treated version of the same woodtop and a "regular lacquered desk". Before setting it on your expensive wood furniture, you might want to put a coaster down. If not, refinishing the surface altogether would solve the issue - though that isn't a great option for anyone with high-end furniture.

You could also try a DIY solution and mount it to a wall with a bracket. If a white ring has been formed on your furniture, it is best that you let it be as it is or risk further damage to the wood.

I would advise anyone purchasing these speakers to place something between them and whatever surface you're planning to place it on.

Word of the staining is the latest in what has been a bumpy rollout for the HomePod.

HomePod is designed for indoor use only. The thing should start shipping next week, so maybe keep the HomePod in a safe space until then.

HomePod owners have been tackling this regrettable issue through the use of social media in efforts to shed awareness of the matter, as well as express their obvious frustrations.

The Wirecutter spotted the issue, as did Pocket-lint, and Apple confirmed that it is, indeed, a known tendency of the HomePod.
