More Afghan Civilians Being Deliberately Targeted, UN Says

How the U.S. Benefits From Foreign Aid to Afghanistan

The Taliban said on Wednesday they want to end Afghanistan's war through dialogue but warned that their willingness to find peace did not mean they were exhausted and that their armed campaign would be sustained no matter how powerful the USA opposition.

The UNAMA associated 65 per cent of civilian deaths with groups opposed to the Kabul government: 42 per cent to the Taliban, 10 per cent to the Islamic State and the remaining 13 per cent to other insurgents and unknown groups.

The highest number of "civilian casualties from suicide and complex attacks in a single year in Afghanistan" was recorded in 2017, with 605 people killed and 1,690 wounded from such incidents, according to the report.

Citing the "3,546 American and foreign soldiers" killed and the "87 percent rise" in heroin production in 2017, the letter argues that "if the policy of using force is continued for another one hundred years, the outcome will be the same ... as you have observed over the last six months since the initiation of Trump's new strategy".

Afghanistan has been mired in conflict since 2001 when the United States invaded after 9/11.

But as the Taliban and the Islamic State group have come under more pressure they have increasingly carried out indiscriminate assaults in cities, with casualties from suicide bombings and attacks jumping by 17 percent. They claimed both attacks.

10,000 civilian casualties in 2017 - United Nations reportSuicide attacks and IEDs caused high number of deaths and injuries GENEVA / KABUL (15 February 2018) - More than 10,000 civilians lost their lives or suffered injuries during 2017, according to the latest annual United Nations report documenting the impact of the armed conflict on civilians in Afghanistan.

More than 10,000 Afghan civilians were killed or wounded in violence previous year, the United Nations said on Thursday, with militant bombings the main cause while air strikes by U.S. and government forces inflicted a rising toll.

The Taliban militants who control large parts of the countryside responded to the threat posed by the USA military forces by attacking Kabul in the past few weeks and killing over 150 people. "The Taliban had been making last efforts for their presence in Helmand and some security forces suffered casualties due to recent fighting", he added.

Referring to the report, the Taliban warned North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and US military that they will never be able to win the war with "mercenaries, notorious contractor firms, and immoral stooges".

They implored the president to not repeat the mistakes of his predecessor and resort to negotiations instead of Imposing war on the country.

"The letter alone doesn't show willingness to engage in peace talks".

"Our preference is to solve the Afghan issue through peaceful dialogue", the letter said. "The recent attacks speak louder than these words", said the spokesman, Captain Tom Gresback.
