Black Panther smashes multiple box office records in opening weekend

The Women of 'Black Panther:' 'They Are Kings Because of the Queens'

Black Panther's massive marketing campaign didn't hurt - The New York Times reports Disney spent nine months promoting it - but it also had the advantage of a built-in fan base.

It is the first Marvel superhero film with a predominantly black cast and is expected to smash box office records.

Since its release last week, the film has instantly became the top grossing movie by a black director (Ryan Coogler) - beating out F Gary Gray's Fate of the Furious by nearly $100 million - after taking in a whopping $361m (£257m) globally on its opening weekend, $192m (£137m) of that made in America, according to Box Office Mojo.

Analysts had expected "Black Panther" to arrive to about $165 million in North American ticket sales, which would itself have been an astounding result for a release outside the holiday and summer corridors.

When the film was envisioned, it must have been thought of as just another standalone film in MCU, but now, Black Panther is the biggest non-Avengers film in terms of press coverage and overall popularity.

"Black Panther" has demolished the record for the largest Presidents Day weekend, blowing past "Deadpool's" 2016 mark of $152 million. On review aggregation site RottenTomatoes, it scored a 97 percent certified fresh rating, making it on track to taking the title of the highest superhero "Tomatometer" ever. But as it got closer to its release date, those estimates surged to up to $150 million, and finally, to between $170 to $200 million. It's received an A+ CinemaScore, the only Marvel film to have done so besides 2012's "The Avengers".

Stars of the film including Chadwick Boseman and Oscar victor Lupita Nyong'o, came to Seoul earlier this month or Black Panther's Asian premiere.

Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, Black Panther also features Lupita Nyong'o, Michael B Jordon, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Angela Bassett, Forest Whittaker and Martin Freeman among others.
