Turkish women sentenced to death in Iraq for joining IS

Abdul Sattar al-Biraqdar, spokesman for the Supreme Judicial Council, said the Central Criminal Court sentenced 16 female Turkish citizens to death after they confessed to marrying ISIS elements or providing members of the group with logistical aid or helping them carry out terrorist attacks.

Earlier this month, the Iraqi authorities announced the extradition of one of Daesh's most prominent leaders after he was arrested in Turkey in a joint operation between Iraqi, Turkish and American intelligence services.

"Many foreign women came - or were brought - from overseas to join the militants", Reuters reports.

Iraq has detained 560 women and 600 children over alleged links to IS, and has moved quickly to put them on trial.

Also, the Iraqi authorities handed over four women and 27 children of Islamic State families to Russian Federation, after they all were acquitted of charges of involvement in terrorist activities against civilians and forces, the Iraqi foreign ministry was quoted as saying by IANS.

A court in Iraq has sentenced more than a dozen Turkish women to death over membership in the ISIS Takfiri terrorist group and involvement in acts of terror across the conflict-ridden Arab country.

The German citizen was accompanied with her two daughters, who later married members of ISIS terrorist group. The suspects claimed to have been tricked into joining ISIS militants.

Iraq declared victory in December over Daesh, which had seized control of almost a third of the country in 2014.

Belkis Wille, a senior Iraq researcher at Human Rights Watch, was quoted by CNN as saying: "In these cases, the women are getting the harshest possible sentences for what appears to be marriage to an ISIS member or a coerced border crossing".

Iraqi courts have since tried dozens of women accused of voluntarily joining with ISIS.

The Iraqi government declared its war against the group over in December.
