United Nations chief condemns attacks in Burkina Faso

30 feared killed in Burkina Faso terror attack

Burkina Faso police have given an initial death toll of six attackers and seven security personnel, with another six people wounded, including two civilians.

Dandjinou called the assault a "terrorist" attack, but did not specify who the attackers were believed to be.

The Burkina Faso government said at least eight soldiers were killed as well as eight assailants - four at the embassy and four at the military headquarters.

Police said security units were deployed to the scene and urged people to stay away from that area.

Three security sources, two in France and one in West Africa, told AFP that at least 28 people were killed in the attack on the military headquarters alone.

Burkina Faso, like other countries in West Africa, has been targeted sporadically by jihadist groups operating across Africa's Sahel region.

About 30 people were feared killed after suspected Salafi jihadists launched a three-pronged assault on public offices across the Burkinabe capital, local media reports said Friday.

The Paris prosecutor's office has opened a preliminary investigation into attempted murder because the French Embassy was among targets of the attack, a judicial official said on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to be publicly named.

The city's military headquarters and the embassy - which is also near the prime minister's office - are about one kilometre apart. The authorities think both attacks were made by terrorist group Boko Haram.

The U.S. Embassy also warned Americans to stay out of the city center.

That attack pivoted Burkina Faso as a natural target by a deadly cocktail of rebels and religious militias who continue to threaten much of West Africa, prompting the creation of a so-called G5 Sahel force to neutralize such a threat.

On August 13 a year ago, two assailants opened fire on a restaurant on Ouagadougou's main avenue, killing 19 people and wounding 21.

But the French embassy themselves have come out to say they are not being targeted.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told LCI TV there were "no French casualties, as far as we're aware".

A Burkinabe government statement has said that there are still no details on civilian casualties of the attack in the centre of Ouagadougou, reports Reuters news agency.

Five countries - Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Mali and Mauritania - launched a new task force a year ago to tackle Islamist militants in the arid Sahel region, to which global donors have committed $500 million US.
