Laura Muir doubles up aiming to flourish in indoor comfort zone

Athletics Britain's Rutherford withdraws from world indoor championships

Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim, the 2017 IAAF world male athlete of the year, will be in action at the IAAF World Indoor Championships at Arena Birmingham today. The Ethiopian's first global title was secured at the IAAF World Indoor Championships over 1500m in 2012 and she picked up her third consecutive gold over 3000m following a superb performance in Birmingham.

The 24-year-old, who claimed 3000m bronze on Thursday, finished behind Ethiopia's Genzebe Dibaba who claimed a double after also wining the 3,000m.

"I've not done anything, I was just so exhausted at the end of the race I didn't know what happened".

She said: 'I thought if I could scrape a medal that would be great but to get a silver medal is better still. "I've not seen the race back". With 1000m left they all pushed very hard and at that moment I had to go and win the race.

The World Indoor Athletics Championships start in Birmingham on Thursday.

Birmingham-based Robbie Grabarz, who shared the Olympic bronze medal in 2012 and took silver in Portland, is the local hope.

But in loaded fields in the 3000m and 1500m, against three-time 3,000m champion Dibaba, Sifan Hassan and Hellen Obiri Muir's achievements need to be recognised.

Content to sit at the back of the pack, Dibaba sensed the danger and moved up into closer contention as Klosterhalfen brought a sub-nine minute winning time into view with a second kilometer timed at 2:52.95 through the corresponding kilometre mark in 6:07.62.

With 400m to run it was Hassan in second and Muir third, however, the British 3000m champion had a determined look of intent and after manoeuvring past the Dutch athlete, she was not going to relinquish second and held on to cross the line and clinch silver in 4:06.23.

The men's high jump saw a repeat of the London world outdoor competition as Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim, victor in the British capital last summer, faced off with Lysenko.

The 20-year-old world silver medallist has enjoyed an unbeaten winter campaign, setting lifetime bests of 2.35m, 2.36m and 2.37m en route to his seven victories.

The Russian sailed over on his third attempt at 2.36m to ensure Barshim did not regain the world indoor title he won back in 2014. Traditionally something of a 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay specialist - she won bronze as part of the GB 4x400m at the 2016 Olympics - Doyle set a season-best time to claim bronze.

"Honestly I didn't expect to win this event", said Lysenko. She did her utmost to try and chase down Dibaba but Dibaba was just too good. To medal in two and get a silver, I'm so pleased.

They were her first major global titles and the Scot will be looking to do it again on the world indoor stage in Birmingham.

There is also 3000 metres steeplechase world champion American Emma Coburn, who will partner with her compatriot, Katie Markey.

Defending world champion Vashti Cunningham of the United States took silver on countback from Italian Alessia Trost after both cleared 1.93.
