Sharma leads in Mexico as Mickelson makes move

Shubhankar Sharma

With AP Photos.Shubhankar Sharma held his nerve to the end and held a two-shot lead going into the final round of the Mexico Championship.

Now the 21-year-old from India has one last round to hold off a few of golf's biggest names.

LPGA - Florida teenager Nelly Korda shot a third-round 7-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead at the LPGA Tour's Women's World Championship after Danielle Kang made her first bogeys of the tournament to slip back into second place in Singapore. For the week, Casey totaled 18 birdies against nine bogeys and is now 16th in SG: Tee-to-Green (5.017), highlighted by a 13th in SG: Around-the-Green (1.982).

His biggest test might come from the names on the leaderboard.

The passing of golf's generational torch happened on the practice green before the third round of the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship.

Mickleson soon realised his error, apologised and wished him as he went to the first tee for the start of his round.

Mickelson, coming off three straight top 10s for the first time since 2009, is in his best position yet. The victor was Mickelson.

Kang started the day leading by four strokes and finished trailing Korda by one after a 70.

He will be paired up with Tyrell Hatton and Phil Mickelson on Sunday.

"I wasn't playing well enough to have a strategy", he said.

"He thought we were media and he said, "not right now, after the round", Sharma told reporters, laughing as he recalled the matter. "You know, I've had some injuries, had a really bad year, just lost a lot of confidence", Wie said. Then he made a few putts and he came back to me and said, "Have a good day". "I'm sure he's a very talented player, but I haven't had the opportunity to watch him play or play alongside him".

"But yeah, it's great just to see the way some of the guys like Dustin strike the ball". Mostly (it was with) my dad. "I've got a lot of confidence going into the weekend the way I struck it today". I wasn't too hard on myself.

In case Mickelson wants to get caught up on Sharma's credentials, the Indian player is a two-time European Tour victor this season and leads the Race to Dubai (as a rookie).

But first he'll have to outduel Sharma, whose most vivid images of the game are watching major championships as a child into the early hours back home in India.

Keeping calm, a trait he picked from his father, Col M L Sharma, an Army man, who gave him all his time in the growing years, Shubhankar showed little emotion even while chatting with his caddie, Gurbaaz, on the course.

Oh, and he can putt - as evidenced by his 14-footer for par at the 18th hole on Saturday to secure the most unlikely of 54-hole advantages (as an aside, he also has a vintage fist pump). Obviously Rafa had a birdie putt and could have been a two-shot swing.

Coetzee is looking for a fourth European Tour title and a second at the Tshwane Open after winning this event in 2015.
