Guatemala announces it will move embassy to Jerusalem

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales has close ties with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

The decision in December by President Donald Trump to transfer the USA embassy from Tel Aviv to the disputed city of Jerusalem has drawn widespread condemnation, with critics saying it damages hopes for a negotiated Middle East peace. The transfer will take place just two days after the US makes the same controversial move to coincide with the anniversary of Israel's creation. At the time he said, "I'm just trying to do the right thing and allow my God, my people and history to judge me".

This comes as on Sunday Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales announced that Guatemala recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and would move its embassy to the holy city in May, two days after the United States makes the same move.

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales is an Evangelical Christian and strong supporter of Israel and is expected to move his country's embassy after the USA moves theirs.

Guatemala's Constitutional Court has rejected a local lawyer's attempt to prevent the government from moving its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, as the U.S. plans to do, a court spokesman said Saturday.

Israel claims all of Jerusalem as its capital, while the Palestinians see the eastern sector as the capital of their future state.

Standing in front of an image of the Guatemalan and Israeli flags side by side, Morales said that Guatemala was a nation of "Christian thought" and "Israel is our ally and we must support it".

There had always been global consensus that the city's status should be settled as part of a two-state peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians.

"The decision to move your embassy soon to #Jerusalem is courageous and visionary". Only eight countries joined the U.S.in opposing it, including Nicaragua.

Morales said America's leader had been the trail-blazer for his nation as well.

Guatemala was one of only a handful of countries that backed Trump's December decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Speaking after meeting in Guatemala City with President Jimmy Morales, Ambassador Nikki Haley expressed gratitude for Morales' "words and statements" about Venezuela.
