Nearly 1.7 million homes and businesses were without power in the Northeast and Midwest as the storm pummeled the East Coast from Virginia to Maine. Strong winds are expected remain through the weekend, with some cancellations already being reported for Saturday. The sixth victim was an elderly woman, 77, who was killed after being hit by a large tree branch in Kingsville, Maryland, according to Baltimore County Police and Fire Department.

Emergency workers in Washington also pulled a man with life-threatening injuries from a vehicle that was struck by a falling tree, the fire department there said. A 25-year-old man in CT, a 57-year-old Pennsylvania man and a 37-year-old MA man were killed when trees fell on their vehicles Friday.

Because of the risky conditions, more than 3,000 domestic and worldwide flights were canceled in the United States on Friday, according to FlightAware.com, most with destinations or departures in the Northeast Corridor, The Washington Post reported.

Private forecasting service AccuWeather said the storm dumped as much as 18 inches (46 cm) of snow on parts of NY state and Pennsylvania.

New York, the most populous USA city and home to 8.5 million people, was expected to avoid heavy snow but was forecast to receive 6cm of rain and wet snow with wind gusts of up to 96kph. Two people died in Virginia, one in Maryland, one in MA, one in NY, one in New Jersey and one in Rhode Island. Power outages on the East Coast dipped by about 500,000 from a peak of 2 million earlier Saturday, but officials said lingering wind gusts were slowing fix efforts.
