Sanctuary cities lawsuit: Jeff Sessions, federal government abuse their power

Attorney General Jeff Sessions testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee last October

Jerry Brown late Tuesday for enacting sanctuary laws that "obstruct" and "impede" federal immigration agents. It allows ICE agents to interview immigrants at county jails, though not to hold permanent office space there.

Last week Mr Sessions called out the mayor of Oakland, California, who tipped off undocumented immigrants to an upcoming raid. The laws, all passed a year ago, deal with how businesses and law enforcement agencies in the state cooperate with federal immigration officials.

"The provisions of state law at issue have the objective and effect of making it more hard for federal immigration officers to carry out their responsibilities in California", Justice Department lawyers argue in the suit, further calling the laws an "obstacle to the United States' enforcement of the immigration laws and discriminating against federal immigration enforcement".

The administration has lost in a lot of them, especially in its efforts to restrict immigration from a number of mostly Muslim countries.

As legal proceedings get underway, several other measures in California are now under review by DOJ officials to determine whether they too violate federal immigration law. In response to this stunt, I want my message to be clear to Attorney General Sessions: your threats will not change who we are.

The lawsuit comes on the eve of Sessions' speech at the Law Enforcement Legislative Day hosted by the California Peace Officers' Association in Sacramento.

The federal government, he will say, is "fighting to make your jobs safer and to help you reduce crime in America".

"This is really unprecedented for the chief law enforcement officer of the United States to come out to California and act more like Fox News than a law enforcement officer".

"Despite how (De León) has presented the issue, the law enforcement profession, which CPOA represents, can not and does not engage in immigration enforcement". "We're doing nothing to intrude in the work of the federal government to do immigration enforcement", he said.

"Violent crimes against the community shouldn't be supported in any way, shape, or form but there are people being deported for just being an undocumented immigrant", Garcia said. "A series of actions and events has occurred here that directly and adversely impact the work of our federal officers", Sessions said.

This lawsuit is a misguided waste of federal resources - much like the Administration's indiscriminate approach to immigration enforcement that has entangled hard-working residents, including the recent deportation of a Bay Area nurse and mother of three.

"This is basically going to war against the state of California, the engine of the American economy", Brown said in a press conference Wednesday.

In Sacramento this morning, Sessions questioned California's so-called "sanctuary state" policies.

The California laws were passed in response to Trump's promises to sharply ramp up the deportation of people living in the US illegally. In California, a person must be convicted four times in a decade for it to be considered a felony, law enforcement sources said.
