Sharapova crashes out of Indian Wells

I need some time- Sharapova frustrated after third straight defeat

In the only night session match of the day, Osaka, who beat defending champion Angelique Kerber in the first round of last year's US Open built a 3-0 lead in the first set.

The former world number one, and twice a victor in the California desert, Sharapova was one of the tournament's major attractions after missing the last two events. This was Sharapova's first opening-round loss in Indian Wells and the first time since 2003 when Sharapova had a three-match losing streak. Yuki now leads head-to-head record 3-1 against the 22-year-old Ramkumar.

Japan's Naomi Osaka got off to an impressive start at the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday, advancing to the second round with a 6-4, 6-4 win over former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova.

Sharapova's world ranking of No.41 forced her to play a first-round match in the tournament she has won twice.

Sharapova's shot choice often backfired as she failed to take advantage of the momentum and was unable to pounce on second serve returns, most notably at 4-4 30-30, and Osaka was back rolling once more as the Russian lost her footing.

She trailed 4-1 in the first set before holding serve at 4-all. A daring backhand passing victor at 4-4 30-30 saw Osaka claim the vital hold for 5-4, which meant that Sharapova once again had to serve at a critical moment.

Sharapova then fought back, breaking back in game seven and then holding to tie things up at 4-4.

Caroline Dolehide, a 19-year-old wildcard, fired 11 aces to outlast 78th-ranked Shelby Rogers 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-3.

The 16-year-old's poised and polished performance came in stark contact to the dismal display of Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, who was humbled 6-3 6-4 by American qualifier Sachia Vickery.

Serena Williams returns to the tour for the first time in 14 months on Thursday when she plays a first-round match against Kazakh Zartina Diyas.
