Kenya's president and rival meet 'to confront and resolve differences'

On South Sudan, the Kenyan leader said that his country, together with other regional partners, has remained fully engaged in finding a lasting solution.

Mr Donald Yamamoto, the acting assistant secretary of state for African Affairs, has said although the U.S. is not ignoring the Opposition, Mr Tillerson is not expected to meet with Mr Odinga.

"We have come to a common understanding, an understanding that this country of Kenya is greater thatn any one individual", Kenyatta tweeted.

"Kenya calls on the U.S.to strongly consider the proposal made to have a surge operation in Jubba Valley region, which was made nearly three years ago, in order to root out al-Shabab", Kenyatta said.

In January, Odinga took a symbolic presidential oath in a Nairobi park in a direct challenge to Kenyatta.

Mr Odinga is confident that ALL the ills that imperil this nation will be addressed in the programme that is being drawn up, given the overwhelming demand for change that Kenyans have shown in the last few months.

Prominent anti-corruption campaigner John Githongo said it was hard to understand why the meeting happened now and he cautioned that "the devil is in the details".

Odinga said: "the conflict is over" and called on the country to "reconcile and move on".

Allies in Odinga's NASA coalition, including his running mate in last year's poll, Kalonzo Musyoka, said they were not aware of the meeting and promised to give a detailed statement later.

In other words, the "reconciliation" between Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila is a fundamental betrayal of the hundreds of innocent Kenyans who have lost their lives fighting for democracy and in defence of Raila Odinga's stolen electoral victories of 2007, 2013 and 2017.

"The US should not be dismissed or discounted".

The two leaders said in a statement they agreed to set up an office staffed with advisers from both parties, to deal with issues ranging from ethnic divisions to the opposition's disputes with the 2017 election.

That's not a coincidence, said independent political analyst Martin Andati.

Moses Kuria, a legislator for Kenyatta's Jubilee party said the meeting could be the start of ending the cycle of disputed elections and their ruinous impact on economic growth. He also said the country had a "problem" with its judiciary that needed to be fixed. "That is the only way this country will go into the election on October 26".
