Richard Sherman to visit with the Lions

Richard Sherman said Friday that he had been released by the Seahawks

Richard Sherman hasn't been a free agent for 24 hours, but already he has a long list of suitors, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Seattle Seahawks released an iconic figure in their franchise history on Friday, parting ways with cornerback Richard Sherman.

It also might convince defensive end Julius Peppers, who's weighing his future, to decide to play another season. Health will surely play a role in the type of contract Sherman receives in free agency.

But maybe Detroit's "preliminary interest" in Sherman signals that they're about to be more active in the veteran cornerback market than we thought.

Yet, the 49ers are expected to be cautious when evaluating Sherman after an Achilles injury sidelined him for the final seven games last season.

Still, the Patriots would be well-served to explore the possibility of bringing Sherman into the fold.

It's ironic. Sherman, 30, was a central figure in the classic 49ers-Seahawks rivalry of the early 2010s.

Sherman was part of five Seahawks playoff teams, appeared in two Super Bowls, and helped Seattle win Super Bowl XLVIII.

Since entering the league in 2011, Sherman has been one of the NFL's best at the position. Niners general manager John Lynch has plenty of salary-cap space to potentially sign Sherman - roughly $70 million, according to Over The Cap.

Asked by Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network on Friday what he wants out of a new team, Sherman said: "Looking for a great fit".

San Francisco started the offseason with a $137.5 million pact with impending free agent Jimmy Garoppolo. And Schefter says it's possible that Sherman, who grew up in California, will stay in the area after his visit.
