Soldiers on Salisbury streets as terror investigation deepens

UK Prime Minister Theresa May

Rudd said that Nick Bailey, a police officer who became unwell after taking part in the early response to the attack, remained seriously ill but was talking and engaging with his family.

Western intelligence services consider Russian Federation as a leading suspect, based on previous attacks that used a similar substance and method, a Western intelligence official told CNN.

Commenting on people spying on Russian Federation, he said: "Don't choose Britain as a place to live".

"A number of those have been through the hospital treatment process, they're having blood tests, they're having treatment in terms of support and advice", he added.

Police say their deaths are part of the investigation into the poisoning of Mr Skripal, 66, and his daughter Yulia, 33, who were found slumped on a park bench in Salisbury on Sunday evening. They believe the pair were deliberately targeted.

But it was a different take from the British Home Secretary who visited the scene.

Irina Petrova, a friend of the former double agent's daughter, said Yulia was a "normal kind of person" who had lived in the United Kingdom for five years after her father's return to Britain in a spy swap. He said Russian Federation was ready to assist "any investigation" but that it was "not necessary to hurl unfounded accusations on TV".

The grave of Mr Skripal's wife Liudmila, who was buried in 2012, and the memorial stone of his son Alexander, who was cremated a year ago, were cordoned off at the London Road cemetery.

Highly toxic and banned in nearly all countries, nerve agents require expertise to manufacture - leading some to suspect whoever poisoned Skripal had the backing of a state.

"We will have to wait until we're absolutely clear what the consequences could be, and what the actual source of this nerve agent has been", Rudd said in Salisbury.

The U.K. has vowed to take strong action against whoever is responsible for the "brazen and reckless" attack.

The authorities did not provide details, saying only that they had not exhumed any bodies, but the forensic activities at the London Road Cemetery intensified speculation about the poisonings.

According to the headstone, Mr Skripal's wife Liudmila died on October 23, 2012 at the age of 59.

Skripal was jailed in Russian Federation in 2006 for selling state secrets to the British intelligence services but was released in 2010 as part of a high-profile spy swap.

Mr Seely, who is also a former Soviet Union reporter for The Times, said the investigation needs to be balanced and facts need to be established before fingers are pointed. "I don't talk too much to the customers, but he was, you know, one of the very kind customers".

"Someone has come onto our soil. has recklessly, brazenly, committed what looks like a very nasty crime, with a nerve agent prohibited, by most worldwide laws. and has potentially put lots of people at risk", he said.

Unlike radioactive poisons, nerve agents dissipate quickly.

Sarin was used in the 1995 attack on the Tokyo subway, carried out by the Aum Shinrikyo doomsday cult, which killed 13 people and injured 5,500 others.

British politicians have raised concerns that foul play was involved in the deaths of Lyudmila and Alexandr, who died while on a visit to Moscow in 2017.
