Trump brags about support for North Korea talks

In the tough times Trump goes it alone

President Donald Trump has apparently had enough of the media criticizing his decision to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

"North Korea has not conducted a Missile Test since November 28, 2017 and has promised not to do so through our meetings". "You think you have an agreement one minute and then you don't the next minute".

President Trump claimed Saturday to have the backing of the leaders of China and Japan for his high-risk plan to hold a summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

Trump's decision to talk with Kim came as no surprise to top USA military officials, though they were wary of setting any expectations.

Add to that the mystery of Kim himself, who is not known to have met with another head of state since taking charge.

The gathering of Canada, the U.S., U.K., Australia and 13 other countries placed a heavier focus on sanctions than diplomacy. "Beyond that, we only have Dennis Rodman to go on".

Similar invitations from Pyongyang have been extended to other USA presidents, but Trump is the first to accept.

The White House demonstrated its own capacity to complicate the situation on Friday.

The White House said the ever-more-powerful Chinese president committed to "maintain pressure and sanctions until North Korea takes tangible steps toward complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization".

As aides scrambled to catch up with Trump's decision, taken before consulting key confidantes, the White House sent mixed messages about conditions. "Time and place to be determined".

South Korean National Security Adviser Chung Eui-Yong announced on Thursday that Trump had agreed to meet with Kim by May for talks on permanent denuclearization.

"The expectation is that the talks would lead to a discussion around a conclusion that we're ready to engage in negotiations", a senior State Department official said last night.

"They've always said they'll give up their nuclear program if the threat from the United States is removed, so their position hasn't changed in three decades", Samore said.

Trump's first decision - to impose a 25% tariff on steel imports and a 10% tariff on aluminum - rankled American allies, leading them to promise a punitive response on all American products like bourbon, jeans and motorcycles.

"But we've been optimistic before, so we're going to have to watch actions and see if they match words", he said.

The President also said his Chinese counterpart told him he "appreciates" US efforts to "solve the problem" with the rogue regime diplomatically rather than through "ominous" means.

But, as has been the case with Trump's first year in office, the President's pre-campaign rhetoric is often at odds with his administration's actions.

Goldstein later said Tillerson was feeling better and would resume his travel schedule Sunday.
