Packers to Release Jordy Nelson

Billboard in Milwaukee urges Packers to sign Jimmy Graham

Nelson has been Aaron Rodgers's favorite target for virtually their entire careers with the Packers. The Green Bay Packers announced on Tuesday that they have released veteran wide receiver Jordy Nelson.

Nelson, who eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards four times with the Packers, won a Super Bowl during his third season in Green Bay and ranks fourth in the National Football League in touchdown receptions (63) since 2011 despite missing the entire 2015 season due to injury.

He's racked up 556 catches for 6,800 yards and 69 touchdowns.

We're not used to seeing tweets fly fast and furious that describe the Packers as shoppers in the free agent market.

Some though new GM Brian Gutekunst might be a bit gunshy about signing a big-game tight end, given how the Bennett experiment ended. Granted it's near impossible to put 10 years of experience into a lost season, but nothing even close to Nelson's past had emerged, and many wondered if Nelson was done. His release saves Green Bay more than $10.2 million.

Nelson would have carried a $12.5 million cap hit for the upcoming season, as he still had one-year left on the four-year, $39 million deal he signed with Green Bay prior to the 2015 season.

Catching touchdowns is really Graham's best asset, as he had 10 last season - including nine in an eight-game flourish around midseason.

The Green Bay Packers are signing arguably the best tight end in free agency while parting ways with one of their most experienced team leaders.

"I don't think at this time (but) you never say never", Gutekunst said.

One can only imagine what quarterback Aaron Rodgers must have felt.

The Packers made sure they didn't lose two of their up-and-coming young players when they extended qualifying offers to exclusive-rights free agents Michael Clark and Justin McCray, ESPN.com reported. But his production declined last season with Rodgers sidelined much of the year by a collarbone injury. He caught 550 passes to rank third in franchise history.
