Bayern beats Besiktas 3-1 to reach Champions League quarters

Thiago Alcantara

Only Caner Erkin, Gary Medel, Ricardo Quaresma and Vagner Love kept their places.

The team selection paid off as Thomas Mueller crossed for Thiago to kill off any Besiktas hopes of a huge upset in the 18th minute.

Bayern Munich's coach Jupp Heynckes walks on the pitch as his players warm-up during a training session in Istanbul, Tuesday, March 13, 2018, ahead of their team's Champions League round of 16 second leg football match against Besiktas Wednesday.

Hummels, who along Jerome Boateng was booked in the first half, was replaced by Niklas Suele at the break before Bayern extended their lead thanks to a Besiktas own goal. The visitors' level consequently dropped and Besiktas improved toward the end of the half.

Besiktas improved and were rewarded when they pulled a goal back following a mistake in the Bayern defence, Love slotting into the bottom corner past Sven Ulreich for his first Champions League goal since 2011.

Sandro Wagner's goal in the 84th minute made it 3-1, as Bayern advanced to the quarter finals.

"Of course we are hungry (to complete a treble)".

The only concern for Bayern was an apparent foot injury for Thiago, who was visibly frustrated as he went off in the 35th for James Rodriguez.

Top scorer Robert Lewandowski surprisingly started up front, leaving Wagner waiting for his elite European debut until the last 20 minutes. Their side can wrap up the league title this weekend, while a cup semifinal against Schalke also awaits.

"We wanted to qualify, or at least experience an exciting tie but the big difference [in the first tie] did not suit us well", he said.
