Naresh Agarwal takes back his remarks on Jaya after facing criticism

Sushma Swaraj Welcomes Naresh Agarwal in BJP Slams Him Over His Statement on Jaya Bachchan

March 13 (ANI): Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday condemned newly-inducted Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member Naresh Agrawal's statement directed at veteran actor and Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Jaya Bachchan. "Nobody found it proper", Agarwal had said referring to the re-nomination of renowned film actor Jaya Bachchan by the Samajwadi Party for yet another Rajya Sabha term from Uttar Pradesh. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav tweeted: "We condemn the BJP and Naresh Agrawal for his derogatory statement against Jaya Bachhan".

Irani said when a woman's honour is challenged, "we stand as one in our condemnation irrespective of our politics". This decision by the Samajwadi Party left Agarwal fumed as it was in favour of Jaya Bachchan. Till three more BJP candidates filed their nomination on Monday, BSP was hoping of a smooth sailing for its candidate since it has 19 MLAs of its own, seven of Congress, 10 spare votes of SP and one from RLD. Just because she could dance and act in films, my candidature (to Rajya Sabha) has been sacrificed for her. While eight of the 11 names can easily cruise through, party insiders say, there is a "game plan that would be understood at the right time".

Naresh Agrawal, a powerful Samajwadi Party leader today joined the BJP here with a controversial remark against women, that forced his new party to issue a disclaimer. However, Samajwadi Party sources told ThePrint that the party was aware of his willingness to join the BJP.

Agrawal's comment was criticised by External Affairs Minister and BJP leader Sushma Swaraj. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra also distanced the party from Agarwal's comment. "I take back my words", said Agrawal on Tuesday.

During the press conference, Naresh also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanth and Amit Shah but also maintained that his respect for Mulayam Singh Yadav and Ram Gopal Yadav is intact.
