United plane heading to St. Louis diverted after pet mistakenly loaded onboard

German shepherd was mistakenly flown to Japan on a United Airlines flight

A United flight headed to St. Louis was diverted to Akron, Ohio, after the airline mistakenly loaded a pet onto the flight.

Flight 3996 was carrying 33 passengers from Newark, New Jersey, to St. Louis, but the pet was due to fly from New Jersey to Akron. United said the dog was successfully reunited with its owner. Turns out United has a particularly awful track record when it comes to safely transporting pets. Eighteen of those 24 were on United Airlines flights.

Kokito, pictured in an undated handout photo, died on a United Airlines flight on March 12, 2018, after being placed in an overhead bin.

The dog named Irgo ended up on a private plane that United chartered from Japan.

Kara Swindle and her two children took a United flight Tuesday from OR to Kansas City, Missouri, during a move to Wichita, Kansas.

The beleaguered airline experienced it's third dog -related mishap this week when it loaded a puppy on the wrong flight on Thursday.

When they went to pick up Irgo, they were shown a Great Dane that was supposed to go to Japan.

Passengers were provided compensation for the delay, Noonan said, but she declined to describe the compensation or confirm how many passengers were onboard.

Prosecutors from the Harris County District Attorney's Office in Houston announced Thursday that they were reviewing Kokito's death to see whether animal cruelty charges are warranted. Irgo was eventually flown back to the United States in first class.

"Never, never ever would I ever imagined that, no", Irgo's owner Kara Swindle said.
