McCabe gives memos to Mueller's team

Trump Hires Conspiracy Theorist to Join Legal Team Involved in Mueller Probe

Mr Trump was referring to a dossier of unfavourable research funded by the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton's campaign.

Mr Trump had said Mr Mueller would cross a red line with such a step.

In one of his tweets, Trump protested, "Why does the Mueller team have 13 hardened Democrats, some big Crooked Hillary supporters, and Zero Republicans?" Mr Mueller is a Republican.

The US President this weekend claimed the probe "should never have been started".

The president continued posting about Mr McCabe's departure on social media, saying there had been "leaking, lying and corruption" at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as the defence and state departments.

President Trump also continued his social media commentary about the former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe, who was sacked on Friday less than two days before he could retire from the bureau.

Mr Comey's book, A Higher Loyalty, topped Amazon's best-seller list on Sunday.

The president has always been torn over how to approach the Mueller probe.

The special counsel investigation is being led by Robert S Mueller III, a former director of the FBI.

Trump's claim that the Russian Federation probe was based on a "fake dossier" is also inaccurate. Trump sent his Sunday tweets from the White House.

"In response to media speculation and related questions being posed to the administration, the White House yet again confirms that the President is not considering or discussing the firing of the Special Counsel, Robert Mueller", Cobb said.

Trump's attacks raised new concerns among members of Congress that he could be seeking to orchestrate Mueller's firing.

"If he tried to do that, that would be the beginning of the end of his presidency, because we're a rule of law nation", Mr Graham said. Lindsey Graham warned that if Trump fired Mueller he would face grave consequences.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., called for the passage of bipartisan bills created to protect Mueller that have stalled in Congress.

Sen. Richard Durbin of IL, the chamber's second-ranking Democrat, said he is concerned about "a constitutional crisis in this country".

Under instruction from his attorneys, Trump has in the past been careful not to publicly criticize Mueller by name or otherwise directly antagonize the special counsel, but rather to make more general criticisms.

Comey, too, had kept memos detailing their interactions.

Trump said, "the Fake News", Trump's epithet for the national news media, "is beside themselves that McCabe was caught, called out and fired". Mr. Trump tweeted at 8:35 a.m. ET.

McCabe said in a statement, however, that his firing is part of a larger effort to discredit the FBI and Muller's investigation.

He called Attorney General Jeff Sessions' firing of former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe late Friday, who was ousted a little over 24 hours before he was to retire, as a "horrible day for democracy". But suspicions he was cast out for political reasons have been stoked by Trump's incessant public campaign for his ouster. "I don't believe he made memos except to help his own agenda, probably at a later date", Trump tweeted.

News that Mr McCabe had kept records of his conversations with Mr Trump and FBI Director at the time James Comey emerged on Saturday.

USA media say the memos will support Mr Comey's account of the circumstances of his dismissal last May.

"Wow, watch Comey lie under oath to Senator G when asked "have you ever been an anonymous source. or known someone else to be an anonymous source.?"

Mr McCabe had been under internal investigation by the FBI and had already stepped down from his deputy post in January pending the review.

Meanwhile, Democrat leaders also voiced their disapproval of Trump's tweet. "Give him the time, the resources, the independence to do his job, and when you are innocent, if the allegation is collusion with the Russians and there is no evidence of that, and you're innocent of that, act like it". Aides would not say who the president's golfing partners might be.

The memos could support claims that Mr Trump sought to obstruct justice.
