Rubio says FBI's Andrew McCabe should have been allowed to retire

According to media reports on 17 March 2018 former Deputy Director of the FBI Andrew Mc Cabe was fired by Attorney General Jeff Sessions two days before his 50th birthday after which he would have been able to retire from the FBI with a full pension. EF

"Sanctimonious [ex-FBI director] James Comey was his boss and made McCabe look like a choirboy". "The department and the bureau have been slow, very slow, in getting them to us".

Mr Sessions said he acted on the recommendation of FBI disciplinary officials who said Mr McCabe had not been candid with a watchdog office investigation.

US President Donald Trump has fired off angry tweets for the second straight day railing against the Justice Department special counsel's Russian Federation investigation.

John Dowd, a lawyer for Trump on Saturday, said Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein should end Robert Mueller's investigation into whether Trump's campaign had ties with Russian Federation.

In Trump's telling, the investigation was "based on fraudulent activities and a Fake Dossier".

The tweets have put lawmakers on edge, particularly members of Mr. Trump's own party, for fear that he may fire Mueller.

White House legislative affairs director Marc Short downplayed Trump and Dowd's comments in an interview with moderator Margaret Brennan on CBS's "Face the Nation", saying neither Trump nor anyone else in the White House is suggesting not cooperating fully with the Mueller investigation.

On Sunday, Michael Bromwich, a lawyer for McCabe, tweeted: "We will not be responding to each childish, defamatory, disgusting & false tweet by the President".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said he made a decision to fire McCabe based on the findings of the Justice Department's internal watchdog, which concluded that McCabe allegedly misled investigators looking into how Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation officials handled matters associated with the 2016 presidential election.

Mr McCabe documented his interactions with Mr Trump in a series of memos, and those memos could play into Mr Mueller's probe.

Trump Assails Special Counsel Mueller as Politically Biased in Russia Probe

In earlier tweets, Trump accused Comey of lying under oath in congressional testimony and dismissed as "fake memos" contemporaneous notes McCabe and Comey took of their interactions with the president.

"Spent very little time with Andrew McCabe, but he never took notes when he was with me".

Trump said Mueller's team consists of "hardened Democrats" (whatever that means) and "Zero Republicans".

McCabe was just two days away from retiring after a 21-year career in the US government, but the forced exit might cost him his pension. "If he has any information he hasn't revealed out of a sense of loyalty, that might be told now", Mr Cramer said.

Dowd said he wasn't speaking for the president. "WITCH HUNT!" Trump tweeted late Saturday.

"I just don't think the President - as unpredictable as he is - would fire Mueller, and I take the view, and I said so maybe not directly to the President, but indirectly to the President: Just let this work its course", Republican Sen. Trump contended that Comey's and McCabe's personal written recollections of their conversations he had with them are fabricated. James Lankford, R-Okla., also speaking on ABC's This Week.

Comey's book, "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership", rocketed up the list over the weekend, after starting at No. 15 on Saturday.

McCabe was sacked by Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Friday in a move that Sessions claimed was the result of leaked information by McCabe, and which McCabe said was politically motivated.

It seems to me increasingly possible that, despite its having seemed for some months that Trump was just going to flail around helplessly without crossing any major Rubicon or trip-wire, Trump will ultimately go for broke on shutting down the investigation.
