Apple is Secretly testing its own MicroLED Screens

This is what your new Android phone will look like in 2018

Apple's secret manufacturing facility is testing screens for use in future devices as part of the company's goal of significantly investing in the development of next-generation MicroLED screens, sources close to the matter told Bloomberg.

Further down the line however, Apple is exploring partnering with a number of different display-making companies, as well as designing its very own screens. However, they are very complex and much more hard to produce than OLED displays.

MicroLED screens are flat panel displays that make gadgets thinner, brighter and uses less power compared with current OLED displays. Approximately 300 engineers are working at a 62000-square-foot development facility in California, regarding designing and manufacturing MicroLED screens to utilize in future products. The value of shares of display manufacturers fell after the report from Bloomberg.

Currently, Apple Watch screen is made by LG Display.

Apple - and many other - products now use OLED screens on their devices.

These screens are said to be far more complex to produce compared to the LED displays, and Apple nearly shut down the project a year ago.

For this, Apple acquired a start-up called LuxVue in 2014 and followed up with gradual efforts to see how things pan out. The MicroLED screens, though, offer similar advantages - such as slimmer screens and lower power consumption than liquid-crystal display, or LCD screens. Apple watch is said to be the first product with MicroLED technology. Japan Display dropped as much as 4.4%, Sharp tumbled as much as 3.3% and Samsung slid 1.4%.

Manufacturing of MicroLED is extraordinary complex. We have seen the company move the production of numerous iPhone's components in-house and it's now said to be doing the same for displays as well. However, the company never developed its own displays for devices they have launched till now.

MicroLED is a new display technology that has grabbed the attention of several tech firms.

Although it will take years for Apple to introduce the displays in the market, this is a Golden opportunity for Apple to finally free itself from its biggest rival Samsung and produce the best displays in the market rather than buying from Samsung. There are chances that after Apple finalizes the design and other things, it could even outsource the production of the MicroLED displays. Each pixel has sub-pixels such as red, blue and green.
