Why WhatsApp Co-Founder Brian Acton Tweeted '#DeleteFacebook'

This points to a major loophole in Facebook's API, which allows third-party developers to collect data not just from the users of the Facebook app, but also from that user's friends network on the social media platform. Acton remained with Facebook until earlier this year, while WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum remains behind and still holds a seat on Facebook's board. In his recent tweet, Acton says "It is time #deletefacebook".

He led the team of engineers that created WhatsApp after all. Facebook shares have fallen by over nine percent in the last two days alone, shaving roughly $50 billion off the company's valuation. It appears that Acton was not made to remove the tweet as it's still on the website. Acton has gone on to work with the Signal Foundation, a non-profit extension of the encrypted messaging app, Signal.

Acton isn't the first person that expressed unease after cutting ties with Facebook. Meanwhile, lawmakers from the United States and the United Kingdom have called for action following the reports of the data leak of the Facebook users.

Facebook has come under scrutiny after reports emerged that Cambridge Analytical, a data analytics company, accessed the company's user data for over 50 million accounts without their permission. A former operations manager at Facebook, Sandy Parakilas, mentioned that during his time at the company in the year 2011 and the year 2012, senior executives did little to address his calls for better user data security.

Facebook's stock has slid 10% since the news surfaced and the deletefacebook hashtag has been trending among some users, upset about the privacy violation. The issue has been giving sleepless nights to everyone at Facebook, including the company CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

These issues with Facebook and Cambridge Analytica, is a huge deal, especially considering the possible influence it has had on the United States elections. "We take any allegations of violations of our consent decrees very seriously, as we did in 2012 in a privacy case involving Google", they added, as cited by Cnet.
