Palace urges public to turn lights off on Earth Hour

WWF Earth Hour

The idea is to save energy during that hour, while also encouraging people to be more wary about how much electricity they use. On Saturday March 24, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., the nightly illumination of Niagara Falls will be turned off for the hour to help raise awareness and support for action on the issue of climate change and biodiversity loss. Further, the governor appealed to the people to log onto to www.earthhour.in to know how they can adopt simple practices in their day to day lives that were environment friendly. Celebrating the tenth edition of its signature lights-out event in March 2016, the Earth Hour movement continues to harness the power of its millions of supporters to shine a light on climate action and the power of the individual to change climate change. Every year since it's induction, people around the globe commit to turning off the lights for one hour. "We recognize the importance of educating people and hence we keep doing awareness campaigns and employee volunteering activities to support the environment around the year".

This Saturday marks the eleventh Earth Hour.

Pocoyo, the official children's representative for Earth Hour, will make an appearance along with Mabohai's Po from Kung Fu Panda.

Several countries turn the lights off at national landmarks for the occasion; in the past the UK's Tower Bridge, Italy's Coliseum and France's Eiffel Tower have gone dark.

Dr Liz Shepherd, Sustainability Officer and Campus Energy Coordinator at Bangor University, said: "The University is proud to take part in Earth Hour and excited to be involved with such a great and inspiring event".

"More than half of plant and animal species face local extinction in some of the world's most naturally rich areas in biodiversity by the turn of this century if we continue along the current path that we are trending in terms of global warming", he said.

Earth Hour 2018 comes at a critical moment.

Speaking about the campaign, Ms. Farida Tampal, State Director, Hyderabad Office, WWF-India said, "Earth Hour theme this year is unique and interesting - Connect to Earth".

The report published Friday found the energy saved across the province during the hour-long event was just 0.3 per cent - down 15 per cent from savings in 2008.
