'Pacific Rim: Uprising' Stronger Overseas, Opens to $150 Million Worldwide

It took six weeks but "Black Panther" has finally been unseated as the top film at the North American box office. The original directed by Guillermo Del Toro starred Idris Elba and introduced us to a fictional race of alien sea monsters who rage against coastal cities along the Pacific Rim.

It has now made US$630 million domestically; it will have to reach about US$676 million to beat The Avengers, from 2012, to become the biggest superhero film of all time, adjusting for inflation.

Black Panther was knocked off its perch in the United Kingdom box office last week by James Corden's Peter Rabbit. This weekend, Tomb Raider only made $10.4 million for a domestic total that now stands at $41.7 million. There's something for everyone this week, including the sci-fi world of "Pacific Rim", and the colorful animated-comedy "Sherlock Gnomes". In fact its strong push kind of distracts us from the film's own unabated mission at the box office. That movie also didn't open spectacularly ($37.2 million), and by the end of its run only pulled in a little over $100 million.

"Pacific Rim: Uprising" could point to better results overseas, where it grossed $122.5 million over the weekend. Domestically, it dropped steeply in its second week, sliding 56 per cent with $10.4 million.

Among the flurry of new offerings on the marquee, MGM and Paramount's new animated family film Sherlock Gnomes opened to a disappointing $10.6 million from 3,662 theaters. The Christian drama "I Can Only Imagine" held especially strongly in its second weekend.

Rounding out the top 5 is the surprise hit I Can Only Imagine in third with $13.8 million, dropping just 19.1% from its debut last weekend, after adding 624 theaters to bring its count to 2,253 theaters.

Directed by Andrew Hyatt, the film also stars Jim Caviezel, Olivier Martinez, Joanne Whalley, and John Lynch.

Midnight Sun managed to come in ahead of Steven Soderbergh's Unsane, a new psychological horror-thriller starring The Crown's Claire Foy and shot with an iPhone 7. The Bleecker Street-Fingerprint Releasing film opened with $3.9 million in 2,023 theatres. Produced on a micro $1.5 million budget (that's a lot of iPhones), with many more global markets to go, the $4.6 million worldwide opening is actually solid. It made $1.5 million from 27 screens, averaging out to an impressive $58,148 per location. "Isle of Dogs", about a Japanese island of misfit canines in a future dystopia, has been received with almost equal fanfare.
