Legendary TV Producer Steven Bochco Dead at 74

Kelley today is mourning the loss of his mentor Steven Bochco, who died Sunday at 74, calling him "my beacon, my friend". Among the many classic shows Bochco had a hand in creating, programs such as NYPD Blue and Doogie Howser, M.D. aired on ABC. His credits go on to include "Murder One", "Murder in the First", "Raising the Bar" and "Civil Wars".

Several other series followed, notably the now-infamous musical police drama Cop Rock which was a flop in 1990.

His death saw messages of condolences pour out from various personalities and fans, with the former NYPD Blue star Sharon Lawrence tweeting, "It was his vision, style, taste and tenacity that made me love watching TV".

Bochco redefined television with his overlapping narratives and far from ideal characters. - also expressed paid respects on Twitter, recalling times he spent at Bochco's home as a child.

Boscho was born in New York City in December of 1943 to concert pianist Rudolph Bochco and his wife, painter Mimi.

He attended the High School of Music and Arts before enrolling at the Carnegie Institute of Technology - now known as Carnegie Mello University - in 1961.

He started his writing career in the 1960s.

Bochco will be remembered as an unparalleled influence on the police drama genre, having taken a groundbreaking approach to storytelling by adding a gritty layer of reality to each series he helped bring to life. He produced NBC's Bay City Blues in 1983, and CBS' vice squad comedy Public Morals, which lasted one episode.

From actor Ken Olin: "I was 28, married, & the father of a baby boy when the creator of "Hill St. Blues" came to NYC to cast a show about minor league baseball".

Hill Street Blues premiered in 1981 and got an unprecedented 27 Emmy nominations in its first year. Two years later, Bochco met the man who lengthened his life.

He is survived by his daughter, Melissa, and sons Jeffrey and Jesse.
