The Marine Corps CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing crashed in the vicinity of El Centro around 2:35 p.m., according to Marine Corps officials.
On Oct. 19, 2016, a Super Stallion from the "Warhorse" of Miramar-based Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 465 struck a shipping container at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma in Arizona during reduced visibility landing training.
The incident is the deadliest Marine aircraft crash since a KC130T transport plane went down in MS last July, killing 15 Marines and a sailor. He did not say whether the Marines in the helicopter had been confirmed killed or whether their families had been notified. The names of the dead were withheld pending notification of their families, which typically takes about 24 hours.
A Marine Corps helicopter crashed during a routine training mission over the El Centro area Tuesday afternoon, according to officials. It is essentially used for minesweeping, transportation and is capable of carrying dozens of troops and tons of cargo.
But the aging platform has faced problems, especially in training, in recent years.
Tuesday's crash marks the deadliest crash involving Marines since previous year. He said "our thoughts and prayers" are with the Marines.
Gen. Robert Neller, the Marine Corps commandant, has since said the service's aviation programs were improving following a "horrible" safety record in 2017.He did not single out any specific program - including the CH-53 - as showing particular improvement.
The pilot is listed in stable condition after being treated for injuries incurred after ejecting from the plane. It is unclear what caused the helicopter to crash and an investigation is underway.
