Bollywood Superstar Salman Khan Found Guilty In 1998 Poaching Case!

Salman Khan

Bollywood star Salman Khan was convicted Thursday of poaching rare deer in a wildlife preserve two decades ago and sentenced to five years in prison.

Khan pleaded not guilty and has long maintained his innocence as the case has languished in legal limbo over the years.

The actor shot and killed the blackbucks, from the antelope family, in Kankani village near Jodhpur on the night of October 1, 1998, during the shooting of the film "Hum Saath Saath Hain".

He had been sentenced to prison terms of between one and five years for convictions in related cases which he was later acquitted of following successful appeals.

Arrangements have been made to house Salman in the Jodhpur jail, which houses other high-profile convicts including Asaram Bapu.

The "Bigg Boss 11" victor and former lead of "Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain" Shilpa Shinde, along with actor Arjun Rampal and singer Risha Singh, showed disappointment at the verdict. Khan can appeal the verdict.

The final arguments in the case were heard on March 28.

Khatri in his ruling called Khan a "habitual offender", the Economic Times newspaper said.

"They are praying for probation, they are emphasising on the minimum sentence", he said. He is also to pay 10,000 rupees ($154) for the crime.

For fellow actor Saif Ali Khan, also accused along with Salman, there was some relief.

The case continued from 2002 till 2015, when on May 6, the trial court found him guilty and sentenced him to five years' imprisonment.

The members of Bishnoi community are shouting slogans against Salman Khan and distributing candies as the actor was taken to the hospital for medical examination and then to the central Jodhpur Central Jail.

Not losing heart, she then quietly tried to scale the wall of the building to reach the first floor apartment complex of the Khans, but was espied by the security guards who informed the Bandra police station. "But on being spotted [by locals] and chased, they fled, leaving the dead animals there", he said.

Khan had pleaded innocent in the case that was brought by members of a community known as the Bishnoi, who revere antelopes. "Hence [the] investigation can not be trusted", said the actor's lawyer, H M Saraswat.
