'Stranger Things' Creators Sued for Allegedly Stealing Concept for Netflix Show

Filmmaker Charlie Kessler accused brothers Matt and Ross Duffer for plagiarizing the idea for their hit Netflix series from his short film, "Montauk" and a feature film script titled "The Montauk Project", related to the short film. Today (April 4), the siblings spoke out about the lawsuit with a statement issued by their attorney Alex Kohner. "Some of the 'Stranger Things" cast have alluded to the connection, saying in a Wired interview that the show was based on stories about Camp Hero".

Making the accusation is Charlie Kessler, who claims that he pitched the concept of his short film, Montauke, to the Duffer brothers in 2014.

He says both projects are set in the same NY city, which is home to "various urban legends, and paranormal conspiracy theories". That is not far off from the original concept of "Stranger Things".

Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp star in "Stranger Things" Season 2.

Kessler's lawyer Michel Kernan alleges that the conversation in 2014 between his client and the Duffers created an implied contract.

A 2015 film about the so-called conspiracy, called Montauk Chronicles, won an award at the Philip K. Dick Film Festival. Now, Kessler claims they took his ideas without his permission or knowledge. Kessler's pitched concept was a sci-fi story, which takes place at an abandoned military base wherein kids gets experimented on and revolves around a missing boy. "Mr. Kessler's claim is completely meritless".

His film, set in NY, is about an abandoned military base called Camp Hero and a young boy, Michael, who is drawn to the military base by an unknown force. At this party, Kessler said he discussed "the script, ideas, [and] story" for the project, and it was his understanding that there was an "implied contract".

"Stranger Things" is set in the 1980s in the fictional town of Hawkins, Ind.

When the Duffers were in the early stages of bringing Stranger Things to life, the project had the working title The Montauk Project. The injunction would also require them to "destroy all materials of every nature and kind in their possession, custody or control" based on the same concepts.
