Sumo association apologises after female medics spark sexist row

In sumo's tradition the ring is considered sacred and women are prohibited from entering. So when some women tried

In February, a sumo wrestler was arrested on suspicion of indecent assault, and last month, Egyptian sumo wrestler Osunaarashi was arrested for allegedly driving without a licence when he got into a vehicle accident in central Japan.

The sumo ring is deemed a sacred place which females are forbidden to enter.

The move called for widespread criticism and after the backlash the Japan Sumo Association released an apology.

The medics were among a number of people tending to Ryozo Tatami, the 67-year-old mayor of the Kyoto Prefecture city, who collapsed while making a speech Wednesday afternoon.

Local Japanese media showed video of the event Thursday morning and commentators argued the referee shouldn't have told the women to get out.

But a referee repeatedly told them "Ladies, please get out of the ring", according to the translation provided by Japanese broadcaster NHK-the message was heard loud and clear across the gym's public speaker system.

Tony Finau 'dislocates' ankle after ace
He will still undergo an MRI on Thursday morning, and hopes to play if results are positive and swelling is under control. For the Finau faithful, it was a frightening Wednesday at Augusta National and now likely a nervous wait overnight.

The two women rushed into action, leaping to the aid of the collapsed man lying on the ground and pumping at his chest, both evidently medically trained. However, they were asked to leave the sumo ring. Eventually male firefighters arrived with a defibrillator and entered the ring. "We offer a honest apology", said Hokutoumi, who is also known as Hakkaku, the name of the sumo stable he heads.

Women practice sumo wrestling, but are barred from competing professionally due to this rule.

The mayor was transferred to a hospital where he was diagnosed as having suffered a stroke and underwent surgery, but his condition is said to be not life-threatening, Maizuru city officials said Thursday. "Without the women's effort, the life of one person might have been lost".

This is not the first time that sumo's ban on women has caused controversy.

In 2000, the then governor of Osaka Fusae Ota asked the sumo association to allow her to enter the ring so she could present a trophy to the champion wrestler, but her request was rejected.
