Former soldier Julius Maada Bio elected Sierra Leone president

As Sierra Leoneans are waiting anxiously for the official results of the contentious presidential run-off held last Saturday, March 31, 2018, the two main parties are already claiming victory.

His major opponent, Samura Kamara of the ruling All People's Congress (Apc) has vowed to contest the result.

Meanwhile, President Bio is scheduled to convene his first major engagement as president on Friday when he meets with all permanent secretaries and professional heads of institution at State House.

"Our president, President Brigadier Maada Bio, has been elected", said Richard Tommy, a supporter of the SLPP.

"Tolerance is deeply rooted in Sierra Leone", said Ngolo Katta, a spokesman for local activist group National Election Watch.

Julius Maada Bio is patiently waiting to be officially declared victor of the 31 March, 2018 run-off Presidential election.

The election marks the first time in a decade that the SLPP party has won the presidency.

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Julius Maada Bio on his victory as the new President of Sierra Leone after the presidential election run-off on March 31.

Kamara secured 48.19 percent of the vote, but swiftly challenged the outcome given by the National Election Commission (NEC), saying in a televised address: "We dispute the results and we will take legal action to correct them".

After contracting 20% in 2015, Sierra Leone's gross domestic product growth picked up previous year, reaching 5.4%, according to the World Bank.

More than 2.5 million people, or 81 per cent of eligible registered voters, cast ballots in the runoff, said election commission's chairman, Mohamed N'Fah Alie Conteh.

The campaign was characterised by ugly verbal exchanges and sporadic violence with Mr. Bio accusing the APC of using police intimidation against his party.

The relatively smooth transition came as a relief to the country of seven million people, who in the 1990s endured a civil war fueled by the diamond trade.
