IPhone X Welcomes AR Snapchat Lenses

Snapchat is hitching up True Depth on iPhone X regarding Ultra-realistic lenses

The new lenses use the extra depth information provided by the infrared sensors in the iPhone X TrueDepth camera system to make incredibly accurate face maps, with the masks tightly hugging the contours of the face, in real time. It's fine to develop it for the dark stage of the iPhone launch, but making sure the masks don't look awful in a variety of situations would be key before making them available to users.

These TrueDepth-powered masks were first demoed by Craig Federighi at the iPhone X announcement event in September 2017.

iPhone's AR lenses reflect the encompassing light even more. This, according to The Verge, could mean that Snap is also not allowed to make use of this data for targeting ads.

To use them, just load up the Snapchat camera and perform a long press of the screen.

Normal Snapchat filters take a rough guess at what your face looks like based on a 2D image of your mug.

In the developer agreement, Apple has clearly mentioned that the data fetched can not be used for advertising and marketing purposes, keeping the security issues in mind.

Apple in its developer agreement states face data can not be used for advertising, marketing or generating user profiles. That can be confused, however, especially with faster-moving subjects, leading to misalignment of the AR Lenses. Apple also says it bans developers from creating profiles of otherwise anonymous users by using identifying facial capture information.

Nevertheless, the third-party developers will have access to 50 facial expressions that could inform them how the user raises the eyebrows or moves the mouth.

However, as the adoption of TrueDepth and Face ID grows, it would become hard for the iPhone maker to keep a check on the unfair use of data. Now, those speculations have been put to rest by Apple executives themselves. Let us know in the comments! "It's not something for this year", Apple's senior director of Mac hardware product marketing, Tom Boger, told TechCrunch.
