Dayton ISD teacher accused of having child pornography

Bail set at $2 million for St. Petersburg man on child porn charges

Saturday's announcement was the first Vatican statement on the subject since September.

He could not be reached for comment; the Vatican said he was being held in a cell in the Vatican's police barracks.

The Vatican on Saturday arrested a diplomat recalled from Washington past year amid investigations in Canada, the United States and the Vatican for possession of child pornography.

The Vatican said in a statement that its police force, known as the gendarmerie, had arrested Italian Msgr.

Cappella was arrested Saturday after a warrant was issued by the Holy See's chief magistrate. The articles cited by the statement related to child pornography.

An Italian monsignor, who was recalled from his services at apostolic nunciature in Washington a year ago, was arrested under the suspicion of watching, possessing and distributing child pornography on Saturday by the Vatican.

It is the latest case the Catholic Church has faced after repeated criticism for the way it has handled scandals over paedophile priests.

Capella was recalled from the U.S. by the Vatican secretary of country this past year after becoming caught up in a three-nation evaluation into child pornography.

Capella was recalled from the U.S. Nunciature in Washington, D.C.in September 2017, after the Vatican was informed August 21, by the U.S. State Department, that there was a "possible violation of laws relating to child pornography images" by a member of the Holy See's diplomatic corps.

The United States made "an official request" for the man's diplomatic immunity to be lifted but the Vatican refused, said a USA official on condition of anonymity.

Capella, who has the title of monsignor in an honorary manner and is not a bishop, worked as a counselor for the Nunciature in Washington and before that had worked in The Section for Relations with States of the Vatican Secretariat of State (Holy See).

A statement by Canadian police at the time said the suspected offences occurred while he was visiting "a place of worship" in Canada.

He died in a hospital in 2015 at 67, before his trial before a Vatican court could begin.
