Salman Khan Convicted, Gets 5 Yr Jail Term

The verdict in the 20-year old blackbuck poaching case against Salman Khan will be announced today

The heavily muscled actor contends he did not shoot the two blackbuck deer in the western India preserve in 1998 and was acquitted in related cases.

Stargazers, media crews and security personnel swarmed the court premises and lined up along the two kilometre route from the court as the 52-year-old was whisked away in a Bolero police jeep to spend a night in jail. He was served simple dal-roti which he did not eat.

The judges found that prosecutors had failed to prove charges of culpable homicide, in which they accused Khan of driving while intoxicated in 2002 and running over five men sleeping on a sidewalk, killing one of them.

Salman Khan is all set to appear before a Jodhpur court on Thursday, as it will pronounce its verdict in a two-decade-old poaching case against Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Neelam and Tabu. The court acquitted his colleagues Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Neelam and Sonali Bendre.

# Arguments completed over Salman Khan's bail plea.

Salman was charged under Section 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act and others under Section 51 read with Section 149 (unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code.

Khan, regarded as the bad boy of Indian cinema, was taken into police custody and driven to jail after the sentencing amid chaotic scenes outside the court in Rajasthan state. He spent a week in a Jodhpur jail before being granted bail.

Salman's lawyers have reached out to the sessions court, which will hear the bail appeal on Friday morning. The actor is now working on four movies - Race 3, Bharat, Dabangg 3 and Kick 2.

Today, the court sentenced him to five years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000, prosecution lawyer Mahipal Bishnoi said. "So, approximately Rs 600 crore...", trade analyst Girish Wankhede told PTI.

"Also, in the present case the Hon'ble Court has acquitted all the 5 co-accused which would imply that Salman was out hunting alone in the middle of the night in a remote area outside Jodhpur".

He was acquitted in the case but the Maharashtra government has filed an appeal.
