'A Quiet Place' Crushed R-rated 'Blockers' With $50-M Open

John Krasinski: I'm late to the horror movie party

The film's writers, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, shared that they saw the potential for the film to be integrated into the world of Cloverfield films early on, yet producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form were unaware of the screenwriters' initial intentions and never considered A Quiet Place to be a Cloverfield movie. At least six senior Paramount executives have been replaced in the previous year. The nostalgia-fueled trip into the VR world of the Oasis has banked nearly $97 million to date at the domestic box office, with an impressive global box office take of $391.3 million.

Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One dropped to second place in its second weekend with an est. RealD can take credit for $66.5 million of that global gross or about 17%, while 3D in general accounts for $60 business of the movie's worldwide business.

Another weekend release, "Blockers", secured third place at the box office. Finishing in third place was the comedy, Blockers, which managed to pull in $21.4 million against some stiff competition while garnering mostly positive, and somewhat surprising, reviews. Rounding out the top five were Black Panther (weekend gross $8.4 million, total gross $665.3 million) and I Can Only Imagine (weekend gross $8.3 million, total gross $69 million).

I personally loved the film A Quiet Place, and think that Krasinski did something not many are able to pull off: not only did he perform, but also directed and wrote for the film as well.

It is now only behind the grosses of James Cameron's Avatar and Star Wars: The Force Awakens which grossed $760 million and $936 million respectively in North America. Well, he just made one that follows just The Village as attracting the second largest audience for an original horror movie opening with an estimated 5.5 million tickets sold.

The Ted Kennedy scandal pic Chappaquiddick from Byron Allen's Entertainment Studios, opened to $6.2-M from 1,560 theaters at #7. You get to see it on a massive screen with a state of the art sound system in a dark room with other people who are also watching it for the first time. It also received a "B" CinemaScore. LD Entertainment's "The Miracle Season", about an inspirational season for a girls' high-school volleyball team, opened with $4.1 million. It's the studio's highest opening weekend since "Star Trek Beyond" in July 2016, which opened at No. 1 with $59.2 million.

Cloverfield 4 is slated to hit theaters on October 26th. The film is now playing in theaters nationwide. The Arclight Hollywood in L.A. greatly helped with that average as Phoenix introduced or did QnAs after nearly every single screening, which is a rarity as far as these things go. And good deal more people than the 2.9 million who went to see 10 Cloverfield Lane open two years ago. Ironically, Krasinski admits he's not that into horror movies.
