"Will meet 'Rocketman ' Kim in May or early June": President Trump

Kim Jong Un reportedly willing to discuss denuclearization of Korean Peninsula

WASHINGTON-President Donald Trump on Monday extended the timetable for his anticipated meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying the summit might not happen until early June.

North Korea has not broken its public silence on the proposed Trump-Kim summit, which US officials say is being planned for May.

Kim Jong-un is due to meet with South Korea's President at an inter-Korea summit later this month.

"We welcome the renewed inter-Korean dialogue, but it will only be meaningful to the people of North Korea if it leads to improvements in the dire human rights situation in North Korea", said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch.

Trump took his own administration and other countries by surprise last month when he accepted an unusual offer from Kim to hold a meeting.

"We'll be meeting with them sometime in May or early June", Trump told reporters during a Cabinet meeting at the White House.

'Hopefully it will be a relationship that will be much different than it has been for many, many years'.

Under Kim, North Korea has made rapid strides in its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, and is believed to be nearing the technological breakthroughs required to deliver a warhead to the continental U.S.

Either way, "denuclearization", in the sense that Kim means it, does not equate to what the United States has long sought on the Peninsula: the complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization of North Korea.

Details of the proposed meeting, including timing, remain unclear.

The statement came a day after Trump's administration announced that North Korea has confirmed that it was willing to discuss denuclearisation with them.

Trump has also agreed to meet Kim to discuss denuclearization as soon as next month.

The North's foreign minister Ri Yong Ho arrived in Moscow on Monday after stopping in Beijing.

Trump, also, criticized his predecessors for not addressing Washington's contentions with Pyongyang. "And again, this meeting won't take place without concrete actions that match the promises that have been made by North Korea".

The North had conveyed the invitation to a visiting delegation from South Korea, which in turn traveled to Washington and relayed the message to Trump.

Beyond that, a detailed agenda for the talks will need to be set.
