Asia Cup 2018 moved from India to UAE

The Annual General Meeting of the ACC will be held in Lahore few days before the Asia Cup and the presidentship of the ACC will be taken over by Bangladesh

Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has awarded United Arab Emirates (UAE) to hosting rights of the 14th edition of the Asia Cup which was originally slated to take place in India.

The Asia Cup has been marred by strained Indo-Pak relations since its inception when the UAE hosted it in 1984.

Asia Cup was scheduled to be hosted in India this year but after protests by Pakistan, the tournament was moved to UAE.

The tournament will now be held from September 13-28 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi after all the member nations of ACC agreed unanimously for the change during a meeting at its Kuala Lumpur headquarters.

Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and PCB chairperson Najam Sethi told ESPNcricinfo: "The ACC deliberated on the matter and decided that this was the best way forward". The tournament, to be played in 50-over-a-side format with an eye to the next year's ICC World Cup, will have India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and the victor of the Asia Cup qualifier as the participants. Ironically though, the UAE has had been Pakistan cricket's adopted home for global matches since 2009, following the terrorists attack on touring Sri Lanka cricketers in Lahore. This also means that India team will play all their Emerging Asia Cup matches in Sri Lanka while the rest of the teams who are okay to play in Pakistan can go and take part there. "That's why a number of matches of the Emerging Asia Cup will be played in Pakistan".

The Asia Cup is a biennial event which is now held in both ODI and T20 formats. "Obviously, the BCCI will be paying the Emirates Cricket Board a facilitation fee", the official further informed.

India are now the defending champions after they beat Bangladesh in the final in 2016. Earlier it was slated to begin from April onwards.

Meanwhile, the ACC Board also proposed to have next ACC Annual General Meeting 2018 in Lahore, Pakistan.
