Hungary's Fidesz could pass 'Stop Soros' law in May

The elections of 2014 brought the coalition 133 votes, according to DW.

The victory could embolden Orban to put more muscle into a Central European alliance against EU migration policies, working with other right-wing nationalists in Poland and Austria, and further expose cracks in the 28-nation bloc.

Some of the previous measures passed using this mechanism include those that have put Orban on a collision course with Brussels, including a concerning erosion of media and judicial independence, as well as its crackdown on civil society organizations linked to liberal USA billionaire George Soros - as Orban accuses Soros and the organizations he funds of promoting mass Muslim and African immigration into Europe in order to undermine its Christian identity.

But the "Stop Soros" package promises to go much further, aping similar laws in Russian Federation, slapping taxes on foreign-funded non-governmental organisations that "support" illegal immigration.

In 2015, Hungary built a fence along its borders with Serbia and Croatia to stop illegal migrants.

Soros' face has appeared in campaign ads and the organizations he funds have been targeted with a so-called "Stop Soros" bill.

The government has been accused of using anti-Semitic tropes in its relentless campaign against Soros, who is Jewish. "The EU is not Brussels, the EU is in Berlin, Budapest, Prague and Bucharest", said Viktor Orban, noting that he did not approve the policy of Brussels. He acknowledged differences on issues such as migration, but said Merkel and her government are offering "to advance cooperation further, bilaterally as well as in the framework of our common European Union membership and the values that unite us in Europe".

"The people of Hungary have voted yesterday and the European Union is a union of democracy and values", the European Commission spokesman added. "President Juncker and the commission believe that the defence of these values and principles is a common duty for all member states, without exception", Schinas said. "I will set up a new government, in a large part with new people and a new structure", he said, without going into detail.

"It is quite obvious that there are also controversial issues in our cooperation, the different stances in migration policy come to mind", Steffen Seibert told reporters.

On Origo.hu, a formerly independent website now owned by government allies, stories promoted Mr Orban while also focusing on migration.

-A day after it won an overwhelming election victory on an anti-migration platform, the right-wing populist party of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said it would limit the ability of civic groups to help migrants and refugees. Nationalist Jobbik won 26 seats, while the Socialists were projected in third with 20 lawmakers. The laws are aimed at curbing foreign funding of NGOs.

Two smaller leftist parties, DK and LMP, won nine and eight seats respectively. "This is terrifyingly serious".

In an editorial in the weekly Heti Valasz before the vote, editor-in-chief Borokai cited Orban's recent track record in a decades-long list of political disappointments, saying the key question of the election was whether it would produce any change. "One of the principles of this school is that finances must be in order", Orban said.
