Baby born four years after parents death in China

Tiantian's parents had intended on having a baby through in-vitro fertilization (IFV) and froze several embryos.

Liu was killed right away; Shen died five days later, reports said.

For the following three years, their four parents fought an intense legal battle for custody of the four fertilised eggs left by their late children.

The news outlet explained how the lack of precedent for a case of this kind had compelled the deceased couple's parents through a "legal minefield" before the surrogacy could proceed.

After a year of court proceedings, the Wuxi People's Intermediate Court ruled in favor of the would-be grandparents.

The Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital agreed to release the embryos - but only to another hospital, according to China Daily.

"The risk of suing the hospital was too great", Shen Xinnian, the father of Mr. Shen, told the newspaper. Since the service is illegal in China, they had to look overseas, eventually hiring an agency and settling on Laos, where surrogacy is not prohibited. They finally obtained a court order allowing them to obtain four of the embryos, before "smuggling them over the border to Laos and finding a surrogate mother", The Times reports. During her pregnancy, the surrogate mother travelled to Guangzhou, China, on a tourist visa.

Baby Tiantian was born in December 2017, four years after his parents died in a vehicle crash in Jiangsu.

The little boy's full name is not known although he has been nicknamed "Tiantian", which means "sweet" in Mandarin.

All four grandparents submitted DNA samples to prove that they were biologically related to the baby and maintain custody, according to the Beijing News.

The four grandparents with their newly born grandchild. Last month, the family celebrated Tiantian's 100 days of birth by throwing a small party.

The new grandparents have not decided how they will tell the boy about the circumstances of his birth. "Other babies have their fathers and mothers, but he doesn't", said his paternal grandfather Shen Xinan.

They also revealed that they will tell their grandson about his parents deaths when he is older.
