Four new names have been added to the Atlantic tropical storm list

World Meteorological Organization retires 4 hurricane names from 2017 season

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the names of the four deadly hurricanes that slammed parts of the United States, Central America and the Caribbean a year ago are being retired.

The deadly 2005 season was the highest year on record with five retired names. The organization retires storm names if they were so deadly or damaging that it would be considered insensitive to use it for another storm.

Irma lashed the Caribbean and the U.S., making seven separate landfalls as it tore across the islands and the Southeast U.S. Maria killed 31 in Dominica and 65 in Puerto Rico. Nate will be replaced by Nigel. More than three months after Maria hit, more than half of the island's 3.3 million population still did not have power.

The last names dropped from the list were 2016 storms: Matthew and Otto.

These four names will never be forgotten in the Caribbean and the Gulf Coast after the devastating hurricane season of 2017.

Hurricane Nate killed 45 people in Central America. Their replacements were added to the 2023 season list.

Each tropical basin has its own list of names. The World Bank estimates Dominica's total damages and losses from the hurricane at US$ 1.3 billion or 224% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The NOAA estimate of damage in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands due to Maria is 90 billion dollars, which makes it the third costliest hurricane in U.S. history, behind Katrina (2005) and Harvey (2017).

In 1953, the USA began using female names for hurricanes and, by 1979, male and female names were used.

There are no Q, U, X, Y or Z names because of the lack of usable names that begin with those letters. There are more rules in the name choosing process.

There are also separate lists for typhoons in the western Pacific and tropical cyclones in Australia and the Indian Ocean.
