The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School teacher previously said he was open to the idea of arming teachers.

"Mr. Cruz does not want those funds, whatever money that he is entitled to", McNeill reportedly said.

Chemistry teacher Sean Simpson, 43, who was at the Parkland school during the February 14 mass shooting that killed 17, told deputies on Sunday that he forgot the Glock 9 mm in a stall at a restroom at the Deerfield Beach Pier.

Parkland school shooter accused, Nikolas Cruz wants to donate his inheritance - which could run to hundreds of thousands of dollars or more - to the bereaved families and survivors of his attack, his lawyers said Wednesday.

He was in court on Wednesday for a hearing to determine whether the public defender's office representing him should be dismissed if he can afford a private attorney.

Nikolas Cruz appears in court with attorney Melissa McNeil.

Howard Finkelstein, another public defender, said the money should "go to those who have been hurt", the Palm Beach Post reported.

But Assistant State Attorney Shari Tate said prosecutors won't let that happen and that the case should go to a jury.

Scherer did not immediately rule but said she would issue a decision before the next pretrial hearing April 27.

Police arrested him shortly after the shooting, and Cruz has confessed to being the gunman, court documents show.

An absent-minded science teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School - who volunteered to be trained to pack a pistol after the mass shooting there - was busted for leaving his loaded gun in a public bathroom, according to reports. He also has Microsoft stock that was worth $2,227 as of Tuesday and $353 in a Wells Fargo bank account.

For the sake of the families involved, Finkelstein said, he would prefer his client take a plea and serve 34 consecutive life sentences - one for each of the counts on which he's been indicted. The judge entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf.
