Colorado Senator Releases Statement On Marijuana Policy

Trump says he will back congressional efforts to protect states' rights to legal marijuana

Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) said he and Trump had reached the agreement following the senator's pledge to block all Justice Department nominees until the president promised not to interfere in Colorado's legal marijuana industry.

The name refers to former Deputy Attorney General James Cole, whose memo explained the policy.

"Given how much larger the USA cannabis market is in comparison to Canada or any other country this development is potentially game-changing for industry participants", he said in an emailed statement.

"Since the campaign, President Trump has consistently supported states' rights to decide for themselves how best to approach marijuana", Gardner told the Associated Press.

"The President did speak with the senator", she said. "Late Wednesday, I acquired a dedication from the President that the Division of Justice's rescission of the Cole memo shouldn't be going to impression Colorado's licensed marijuana enterprise". "President Trump has assured me that he will support a federalism-based legislative solution to fix this states' rights issue once and for all".

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed Gardner's account of the president's thinking - but Sessions' reaction was not immediately known.

Though pure speculation, Trump may be looking for a public-relations boost while embroiled in the ongoing investigation by US Special Counsel Robert Mueller into Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential campaign to Trump's benefit.

However, per year early in the day at CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) in Maryland, Trump had claimed he supported medical bud but predicted injectable bud "bad".

"With the President now reiterating this commitment, it is time for Congress to do its part and swiftly move forward bipartisan legislation that explicitly provides states with the authority and autonomy to set their own marijuana policies absent the fear of federal incursion".

Marijuana has been fully legalized in eight states, and 24 states allow some form of marijuana use.

After Trump selected Sessions, a former federal prosecutor and also USA senator from Alabama, as his attorney general, bud fans girded for a crackdown. Nonetheless Gardner talked about Courses had promised him he'd do nothing to intervene with Colorado's sturdy marijuana market.

Gardner stated he had been blindsided when his announcement was left by Sessions in January with regards to bud prosecutions.

Mr. Gardner said that as a result of Mr. Trump's assurances he'll end a blockade of Justice Department nominees. "Because of these commitments, I have informed the Administration that I will be lifting my remaining holds on Department of Justice nominees". Gardner has met with Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the official overseeing the Russian Federation probe who has been the target of Trump's ire.

Inside his Friday statement, Gardner mentioned he'd released until he gained & ldquo; the full devotion that the guidelines of this Cole Memo wouldbe honored, a few holds, but abandoned others in place.

Democratic US Representative Earl Blumenauer of OR, another state with permissive marijuana laws, expressed skepticism, saying, "Trump changes his mind constantly".
