Jeremy Corbyn: Avoid Iraq errors and give MPs vote

Lady Farrington of Ribbleton

The leader of Britain's largest opposition party is suggesting Theresa May, the prime minister, could face a backlash in parliament for her decision to join the USA and France in launching strikes against Syria.

Asked if there were any circumstances in which he would back air strikes in Syria, Mr Corbyn told BBC One's The Andrew Marr Show: "I can only countenance involvement in Syria if there is a United Nations authority behind it".

"What we need in this country is something more robust like a War Powers Act so governments do get held to account by parliament for what they do in our name".

Foreign secretary Boris Johnson said the air strikes were created to deter Bashar al-Assad's regime and others around the world from using chemical weapons.

Mrs May has said "all the indications" are that the Syrian regime of president Bashar al-Assad, which denies mounting a chemical attack, was responsible for the alleged attack in the formerly rebel-held town of Douma.

With U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly mulling his "options" for a military attack on Syria while continuing to issue belligerent threats on Twitter, U.K. Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn condemned the Tory government on Friday for "waiting for instructions" from Trump and demanded an immediate resumption of peace talks.

But Mr Corbyn said military action was unlikely to solve the situation.

Boris Johnson told the programme the government's action was the right course to take and that Theresa May would make a statement on her decision in Parliament on Monday.

Shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry said taking military action against the Assad regime had been the "wrong thing to do".

"Corbyn seems more anxious about upsetting Russian Federation than about preventing use of chemical weapons".

"I have urged the Prime Minister to do all she can to avoid civilian casualties given the complicated picture on the ground in Syria, and she has given me assurances in that regard". The attack killed "up to 75 people", according to the government.

Mr Johnson said her mobile phone had been hacked.

They also insist that the move would deprive Prime Ministers of the advantage of surprise in military interventions and that such legislation would open governments to a potential court challenge.

Asked whether Labour did not believe in military action in any circumstances, she said: "No".

The group said it "strongly condemned" the action and accused May of "sanctioning killing" at US President Donald Trump's behest.

"The government must present the objectives of any proposed action to Parliament".

Mrs May said the action would also send a "clear signal" to anyone else who believed they could use chemical weapons "with impunity".

Protests took place Saturday and Sunday in the United States, India and other countries by leftists organizations and anti-war activists who rejected the attack and called for the end of western intervention in Syria.
