Fox's Hannity revealed as mystery client of Trump's personal lawyer

A week after his online war of words with Fox News host Sean Hannity Jimmy Kimmel had the opportunity to comment on Monday's surprising courtroom revelation that Hannity was a client of President Donald Trump's lawyer Michael Cohen

Fox News contributor and Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz believes that was a mistake on Hannity's part.

Federal prosecutors in NY want a special "taint team" of government lawyers to begin reviewing files seized from Cohen during FBI raids last week, so they can decide which are protected by attorney-client privilege and which may be used to prosecute Cohen.

But in the background, Cohen also had to contend with Daniels' efforts to keep attention on her story, relating to what she says is a past affair with Trump.

Mr Trump, who was in Florida on Monday (local time), said all lawyers are now "deflated and concerned" by the Federal Bureau of Investigation raid on Mr Cohen.

Photographers knocked over barricades outside the courthouse as they scrambled to get pictures of Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, arriving dressed in a lavender suit.

Wood said she would eventually order that copies of all the seized records be turned over to Cohen, but in the meantime instructed lawyers for all sides to come up with search terms that could be used to try to determine which records taken from Cohen pertain to Trump.

Communications between lawyers and the people they represent are typically kept confidential under the doctrine of attorney-client privilege.

Hannity pushed back by saying his business was Cohen was "minimal" and he'd talk about it later, though Dershowitz continued to press on and say he "should've" said something.

Prosecutors said Cohen appeared to have few clients other than the President and they had not uncovered any emails between the two, suggesting the potential risk of violating attorney-client privilege was slim.

After explaining the details over Cohen's confession, who also reportedly negotiated a $1.6 million payment to an ex-Playboy model for GOP financier Elliott Broidy, Colbert prepared to announce the Hannity news.

Hannity has been catching flak for spending much of last week railing against the Federal Bureau of Investigation raids without disclosing his relationship with Cohen to his audience.

Kimmel then read from Hannity's statement about Cohen, which said that the Fox host never retained Cohen "in the traditional sense", received an invoice from him or paid him legal fees.

Prosecutors have asked that the seized documents be reviewed for attorney-client privilege by a "filter team" of lawyers within their own office, who would be walled off from the main prosecution team. "By the way, I'm thinking of hiring Michael Cohen as my lawyer", Kimmel joked.

The raids were based partly on a referral by the Office of Special Counsel, Robert Mueller, who is investigating possible collusion between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russian Federation, according to court filings.

At stake is an investigation that could uncover the inner workings of Trump's longtime fixer and image protector.

The April 9 raid on Mr Cohen sought information on a variety of matters, including a $US130,000 ($167,000) payment made to Daniels, who alleges she had sex with a married Mr Trump in 2006. "On going troubles for the man who paid off Stormy Daniels, New York Attorney and sad neck with hair, Michael Cohen", Colbert said.

Trump has called Mueller's probe a "witch hunt" and denied any collusion.

The searching of any attorney's office by the government is highly unusual and typically triggers the appointment of a "taint team" to check seized material for attorney-client privilege.

He added, "I think they ought to fire Sean Hannity".
